Old Kingston
1896 ---
Shops, markets and an inn line the sidewalk of Grand and Hosbrouk
avenues in the old Kingston. The shoppers and strollers were more than
casually dressed: the ladies had to go through quite a ritual of
getting dressed, which included putting on a tight girdle just to go to
the market to pick up fresh eggs, milk and bread.
The couple strolling down the street will probably stop at the inn for
fresh clams. The two men chatting on the corner must meet quite often,
as do most other people in this village. Everybody knows each other’s
names.
