Coming Home
Many felt the civil was would not last more than a few
months. The faded "Welcome Home" sign tells a different story. It hung
on the tree for four years!
Haunted by memories of the dreadful war that will be
with him a long time, this returning soldier was on a journey homeward
with these thoughts:
"I can still hear the cannons roar. The whistling cannon
balls streaking through the smoky air. Soldiers wounded in fierce
combat, crawling along the battlefields, crying in agony, some begging
to die. The long weary marches through cold rain and snow to places we
did not want to go.
"I can still feel the mud in my boots, though my feet
are dry. Now the fighting's done no need to further roam, it's time to
live life as life should be lived. I'm coming home!" Robert Cepale
