The days were long, the work was hard.
The farmers were often at the mercy of the weather.
But the community spirit was strong. A house or
barn raising was a great event! The host farmer
supplied refreshments, usually a noon feast followed
a successful barn raising. The sweet smell of curing hay
filled the atmosphere. So much was in bloom.
The air was clean and the streams were clear.
Outhouses were built with great pride. Country life
certainly had a nobility about it.
